Recently, Access Holidays Canada had the pleasure of being invited by the Jamaica Tourist Board to participate in an accessibility themed familiarization (fam) trip. The trip showcased the beauty of Jamaica as well as the accessibility features of the properties and attractions visited. The trip provided hands-on experiences for the Jamaica Tourist Board representatives as well as American travel agents who work in the disability market. Throughout the trip, participants, some of whom used a wheelchair for mobility, were made aware of the true meaning of accessibility / barrier free access and problem solving strategies which can be adopted when barriers to accessibility are encountered. These key features gave a ring of authenticity to the trip.
Access Holidays Canada was also requested to provide a presentation on an overview of the economics and statistics of this travel demographic to the fam group as well as representatives of the Jamaican Tourist Board and Hospitality sectors. It was very well received and served to educate this sector on the real value of providing access so that more travelers may choose Jamaica as their accessible travel destination.
Over the years we have shared our accessible knowledge and expertise gleaned from prior trips to Jamaica with clients requesting disability access information. On our most recent visit we were pleased to see the progress that has been made both in adaptation of touristic sites and the degree of acquired accessibility knowledge displayed by the local service providers whom we encountered.
